Yuma, what can anyone say about Yuma, wow what a place. There is plenty to do, you never have to worry about the weather changing much, there is a rich history, and best of all it is still growing and improving every day. Yuma is located at the most southwestern corner of the state of Arizona. It is known as the hottest spot in the state but that is just not always true, sometimes Phoenix out does us. However, it is the best place to live in the whole state.
There is always plenty to do here in Yuma. There are parks that not only have fun things to do and picnic areas but also have historical significance. There is the Old Yuma area, Main Street, where there are shops that are unique to the city. In Old Yuma is also the famous Lutes Casino, which is a great place to eat and a wonderful place just to sit and look around the room. Close to Old Yuma just across the "Ocean to Ocean" Bridge is the Paradise Casino which one half of it is Yuma and the other half in Winterhaven, CA. Now if you just go a little further south in the town there is the 'Brand New' Yuma Palms Shopping Center, which is home to the newest shops, for example Old Navy, Target, PetSmart, and Best Buy.
For nighttime fun, we have the different clubs here in Yuma, one for every kind of person. There is Manske's which is for the 25 to 35 year old crowd, there is Ron's place for the younger 21 to 25 year old crowd, the Bottoms up Pub for the much older crowd and Jimmie D's for the crowd who likes country and jazz. In addition, the Colorado River is right there and there are many different things for people to do like camp out, swimming, barbecuing and four wheeling.
The weather here in Yuma has three different temperatures, Perfect, Hot and really hot! The winter season, although it may be cool at night, I would say has the most perfect days of anywhere I have ever been. The spring and fall seasons are hot, not unbearably, but yes hot, you can start the swimming season as early as the middle of March. The summers aren't just hot, they are really hot, the temps have been as high as 122 degree's Fahrenheit, but then you have to remember that there is not any humidity for most of the summer and usually the temperature drops during the times that there is humidity to make it muggy. All in all there is no better place to live if you have allergies or asthma, the air here is perfect for those conditions.
There is such a rich and interesting history here is Yuma. The first thing to come to mind is the Yuma Territorial Prison, which is still here, and you can tour anytime. The second is the Yuma Crossing, which is located at the Colorado River's edge, that is the area where the Mexicans and Indians could cross the river safest, but still many died trying to cross that treacherous river. In addition, Old Yuma, which still has some of the oldest buildings in the city, there where famous gun fights that, happened there and infamous out-laws lived and hid out there. Then there is of course the fact that the original name for the city was "Arizona City" that just tells me that Yuma was one of the best places in Arizona even back then.
Yuma is growing everyday; we are constantly getting new businesses and new housing developments all over the city. The area between the city and what is known as the 'Foothills'(still Yuma addresses) is getting smaller and smaller. The roads are being widened to support the growing population. We have two Wal-Marts now and one more in the works. The new "Yuma Palms Shopping Center", which has been in the works for over four years, is now open for business and still bringing in new businesses every month.
Yuma is my home and I love it. Those of you out there who have never been here before should really come to visit. This is the best place in the world and the greatest place in the State of Arizona. Don't just drive on by, on your way to San Diego, and not stop and visit, it's really a lot bigger and a lot more interesting that it looks at first glance. If you think Yuma is small and uninteresting, you have probably driven through on I-8, never gotten off the interstate, and taken a good look. I suggest to anyone who loves tourist stops and enjoys learning about the history of Arizona should definitely come here and see what we have to offer.
