Love Yuma

By Jason Scott

I am a Yuma native, and have spent my whole life in the Arizona desert. Some of the things that I believe are awesome about the city of Yuma is the history that lies in the deserts roots, in Yuma we have the territorial prison, the history of the "old Yuma", which is now known as "downtown Yuma", there, you will run across many old buildings. Such buildings include the Yuma County Justice Department, the old historical theater, and even today one driving in the direction of downtown Yuma will run across the same schoolhouses that were around when the town was first developed.

My parents used to always take me to the river, which is so beautiful, and we would fish until the next day. It has wonderful mountains surrounding it that make Yuma sit in a little hole with flat ground all around it. You can find all sorts of different mines that have been abandoned. Yuma will never seem to stop amazing you with its wonderful year round weather and its non-stop sunshine. When you're warm, you can go enjoy all the water around here, from little Colorado to Martinez lake. In the winter we have a wonderful set of beautiful sand dunes that everyone in this little town flocks to, to have fun when the water's to cold.

Yuma is never too big to know everyone in it. This small town is friendly, with all your farmers, to your big corporations, they will help you however you need it. It still has the malls that everyone likes, but when it comes to land and scenery it has plenty to view and appreciate at all times. There is no pollution floating around your head when you go on a walk and there are no big streets with racing cars all around that your children can be hit from walking too close. Come take a hike or a walk in the desert then tell me what you think of it. While you are at it, meet everyone here with all friendly souls you will not want to leave. That is why Yuma is the best little town you can think of.

Another thing that one traveling through this town will run across is the helping hands of friendly people. We as a society have many fund raising charity events for children that have less, we have fund raising events such as the penny pitch, hospice of Yuma, which helps the families of others diagnosed with cancers of any kind.

Having been born in Yuma, over the past ten years, I have volunteered at the local community food bank. I also, from the age of ten until eighteen, was an active member of 4-H, which is a great program for anyone wanting to have fun and learn along the way. The 4-H program is an event in Yuma that teaches kids how to raise animals, how to grow closer as a community. Through 4-H, one learns how to be a role model, and how to make the community you live in a better and healthier place to grow up. For the adults that are in the Yuma Community there is the Rotary Clubs that are basically along the same lines as that of the 4-H for children, (except the adults do not have the pleasure of raising animals).

Although warm in the summer months, there is a lot that one can still find pleasure in doing, some of the fun things that one can do is go to the local swimming pool, visit the local mall, and watch a movie in the new Harkins Theater. In the winter months, one who may not like snow has found the best place. The weather during the winter months is extremely nice, with temperatures in the mid to upper seventies. I have done my share of traveling in my teen years; I have not found a place better than Yuma to live.
