Your Garden and the Value of Your Home

By James Robinson

People sometimes wonder if they can get more value added to their house by having a really nice garden. The only way gardens really relate to the selling price is in terms of how large they are, so unless you can buy up more land it won't make a difference what you do to the grounds. But that doesn't mean that it can't help when it comes to selling your property. In fact research points to the fact that a good garden improves your chances of getting the asking price too.

But getting people to view a property is a really big step towards getting it sold, and being able to move on to wherever you want. People tend to flock to property sites when they're looking to relocate these days. The site offers only a few select pictures to give an impression of the place, and there isn't much to differentiate one person's washing machine corner from the next, but if you have a stunning garden it can't help but catch the eye of potential buyers.

Also when people come to view the property the garden can have a big impact on whether they picture themselves there or not. If you've left a jungle for them all they'll see is work. But also if you've overdeveloped the garden, making it entirely your own, it can be hard for them to think of what they'll get out of the place. Striking a balance is important, and it's all about being neat, clean and plain.

How can you help this? Well, simplicity is best when it comes to presenting the garden. You don't have to destroy its best features, but you should think really carefully about what needs to be there. You are about to move out, and you shouldn't cling to a garden's old look, because the newcomers won't appreciate it. Instead lay down new turf, and root out old plants as much as possible, giving them a clean space to work with.

Of course if you've got beautiful features to your plot, like a bridge, or summerhouse, or carefully cultivated nature garden you don't need to tear it out - it's just a case of getting rid of clutter.
