Yuma is a beautiful little town buried down deep in the bottom left hand corner of Arizona. There are so many wonderful land marks you can visit and actually see and touch a part of Yuma's history. This little town offers a great commodity of outdoor activities that you can participate in. Yuma is a very unique town because of its location right next to the border of Mexico.
The Yuma Territorial Prison every year has a real reenactment of cowboys and Indians and how they fought during their time. While you're there you can visit the Colorado River and go swimming or you can even catch some fish. The ocean to ocean bridge offers direct access from Yuma to California. The original library that was first built when Yuma barely became a town is still standing and has all records of Yuma's history from when the Yuma Indians used to build fires to when Yuma was under Spanish rule and then purchased by the United States. There are two animal refuges Yuma has to offer so people can see the type of animals that can be found throughout Yuma. Another interesting place than Yuma offers is the Fort Yuma Quechan Museum where you can go back in time and learn about the Indians that lived here a long time.
Personally, I have spent about half my life here in Yuma and have really been able to become familiar with the community through various clubs. There are many clubs and organizations within Yuma that a lot of people don't know about. One of the coolest organizations that I have had the privilege to attend is called "College and Career." They meet every Thursday and discuss how God is working in people's lives and controversial topics about God. It is a very interesting group that attracts a lot of young college students.
The Mexico border is about twenty to thirty minutes from Yuma. In Mexico, you can go to the clubs on the weekends and dance and mingle with the local people. There are also different Mexican restaurants you can try; from traditional Mexican food to some Mexican sea food dishes. As soon as you cross the border you feel the atmosphere change, there are vendors everywhere selling: Mexican blankets, sombreros, pottery, rosaries, jewelry, and clothing. The Mexican culture can even be found in Yuma without crossing the border. Travel along 8th Street from Avenue A to Avenue C and you can find little shops just like you would in Mexico.
During the summer, Yuma has a local baseball team, which you can come out and see for only six bucks. There are several pools you can go to keep cool or you can always visit one of the many theaters in Yuma to catch a film or you can even go skating in the indoor, air conditioned skating ring open seven days a week. The beach in San Diego is only a 3 hour drive from Yuma. Another good thing about Yuma is that it is the perfect town to raise a family, because it is mainly a military town. The base has all kinds of military personal working there from all sorts of ethnicities. There is a stronger level of respect in Yuma because the military is so close by.
Overall, Yuma has countless things to offer its community, as well as visitors. It is a small military friendly community with a population of about 65,000 people. The land is fertile and there are 200,000 acres of all kinds of crops such as: lettuce, cotton, corn, cabbage, cantaloupe, oranges and lemons. This small community is the perfect place to live and call home. Almost all the people that live here are in some way connected with the military. The schools offer excellent education for the students and all the people seem to be quite friendly no matter where you go.
