Home Buyer's Moving Tips

By Tom Vanleen

Buying your first home can be exciting, but preparing to move can cause a lot of stress.

Packing up all the rooms of your current place is a time-consuming process. People are often surprised by just how long it can take to get things organized and ready to go. Ahead of time, make sure that you prepare everything for your move. You'll find that everything goes smoother if you plan ahead and keep everything organized. Keep important paperwork easily accessible, so it doesn't get lost during the move. Have your apartment or old home staged so that on moving day everything is ready to be loaded up. Simple preparation will save time and make everything easier as you move from one home to another.

Create a single suitcase or backpack for each person; fill it with all the necessities they would need on a 3-day vacation. Depending on your schedule, this includes 3 changes of clothes that you can unpack in or go to work in, plus toiletries, prescriptions, eyeglasses, and other vital items. Keep these items separated from the rest of the things packed and handy for when you arrive, so if anything else is missing, you will at least have the necessities handy.

For each room, clearly label an "open me first" box in red instead of black ink, so as soon as you arrive you know where are the things you want to have immediately available. This might be soap, towels and toilet paper for the bathroom; coffee maker and paper cups, plates and flatware for the kitchen; etc. Your first 24 hours in the new place will be much simpler if you do this.

When moving, home buyers benefit from the advice that if you move less, you will be better off. If possible, you should put off big purchases, such as appliances and furniture, until you have moved. You will pay based on weight when moving long distances; this can add up. If you can avoid those big purchases until you are set up in your new home, you'll save a lot of money and trouble as you move. And if you haven't used an item in over a year, it's a good idea to lighten the moving load and get rid of the stuff.

Over time, it's easy to collect items you don't need that just occupy space. Give them to charity, or as gifts, or hold a yard sale. When moving day arrives, if you have eliminated items you don't want or need, you'll save yourself a huge amount of work.

Find babysitters to help out with children to give you some time to pack. Get help on moving day too, so the kids are kept away from heavy furniture moving, and avoid upset watching their favourite toys going out of the house, et cetera. The doors will be open, so board your pets for moving day if you can.

Moving can be challenging, especially for first time home buyer's. Remember these tips to give yourself a smooth moving day, and you'll be unpacked in your new home quickly.
