The Carson City Mint was a facility located in this city in Nevada, and it was in operation from 1870 until 1893. All of the coins that were produced here carry the CC mark, and they are considered rare and somewhat valuable in many cases. Since this precious metal was plentiful due to the close proximity of the Comstock Lode the facility was the first choice for specimens that included this material. Gold items were also produced in this city but in fewer denominations, and the silver Morgan dollars minted are usually the most prized.
Between the years of 1871 to 1878, this particular facility minted dimes, but there was a short period of time during those years of 1875 and 1876 whereby 20 cent pieces were also minted with silver. The more common currencies produced were the quarters as well as the half dollars. The silver dollars themselves were made from 1870 up till 1885 before they were halted in their production for a while. Only in 1889 did its production begin again until 1893.
When it comes to numismatic value almost all of the coins that were minted in Carson City are considered valuable. The lower numbers produced and the policy of melting down older specimens in order to produce new ones have made some of the various years and types very pricey because there are fewer still in existence. In some cases you will find that they may be valued at thousands of dollars or even more, and they may be worth more than some gold items instead because of the rarity and high interest from collectors.
In the 1970s the US Government found a cache of Morgan silver dollars, and these were quickly sold off to interested collectors. The additional supply did not help to bring prices down, if anything it actually increased the demand for this type of currency and boosted interest in these coins. While these specimens are only one of the types of currency that was minted at this particular location they seem to be the most popular from a collectible point of view.
These days, coins in mint condition that come from the Carson City facility are very few and locating these will be extremely hard. If you're fortunate enough to find them, be ready to pay a significantly increased price than the other types of coins you see out there. These will have premium value attached to them and will still be considered well worth its highly inflated price. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon any that are still in perfect condition, be prepared to pay an even higher price for these.
