There Are Many Popular American Coins That Collectors Look For

By Keith Bowman

American coins often hold substantial historical significance which makes them appealing the avid coin collectors. Since America was born, there have been literally thousands of different kinds of coins minted. Depending on how rare the coin is and the condition it is in, some of these coins may now be worth thousands or even millions of dollars. There are even some coins that are so rare, they are considered priceless. Many of these are kept at the Smithsonian in the Numismatic Collection.

Mercury dimes are a common pick for many who enjoy collecting these items, and a number of individuals are fascinated by the winged design that these feature. There are a number of uncommon or even rare pennies, some of which are still in circulation in small numbers today. If you come across a 1969 S Lincoln cent with a double die on the obverse this is unusual, and it can be worth as much as $40,000 in some cases.

Coins don't have to be old to be valuable, though. Many newer coins may be very valuable already because of an error in minting. The 2004 Wisconsin state quarter may have an additional leaf in the design. If this is the case, it could be worth $300-400 instead of $0.25! The 1970 S Lincoln penny was sometimes printed with a double die on the front and a small date. These coins could be worth up to $3000.

Silver half dollars are a popular addition to any collection, and the date on the coin will help determine the specific composition. Any that were produced up until 1965 contain 90% pure silver bullion. Those that are dated 1965 and up only contain 40% instead of 90%. The value may be determined by the mint mark as well as the condition, and certain mints like Carson City can up the worth considerably.

Another expensive mistake is the 1982 Roosevelt dime. Some of these coins were minted without any mint mark at all and if you find one of these coins, it may be valued at $50 or more depending on the condition. Regardless of the date, there are many great options to choose from no matter what your budget may be. These coins are only going to increase in value, so even if you have a small budget, you can put together a valuable collection.
