It wasn't long ago that I speaking to a friend who knew someone within the indy wrestling scene. Essentially, he wasn't signed to a specific promotion but rather he was able to move about from one area to another in order to wrestle for various shows. It was his way to make a living and the lifestyle itself seemed, at least to me, adventurous. He had to handle some payments, though, and I feel like commercial collection agencies could have helped in one particular situation.
It troubled me that this wrestler never took into account the benefits of commercial collection agencies. I say this because one particular night, he competed for a show and he was promised a certain amount for his own services. Once the show concluded, though, he could not get in touch with him since he had already left and that's when the problems seemed to sprout. Why a reputable agency such as R.R.S. wasn't hired on in order to take care of this problem is beyond me.
For people who seem to work well in the ring, they still have to cope with the risk of injuries occurring. These people work in order to put their necks on the line and, as a result, sometimes payment can come from suffering. This wrestler did not suffer to the same degree but he was still cheated out of something which he was owed. I don't care what industry you work with but I think we can all agree that this kind of treatment is not right in any way.
It's troubling, to me, because in hindsight the promoter owes my friend's friend an even greater expense. I learned that, at a previous show, this wrestler seemed to tweak a muscle while an opponent executed a move. The shoddy performance did not see justice, though, which is something that I felt like my friend's friend could have taken action against. It's not easy being in this profession but certainly there could have been something done on the matter, right?
Having a set contract with a company is the goal of just about any wrestler but sadly there are not many of those kinds out there. World Wrestling Entertainment stands heads and shoulders above the rest in terms of popularity and there are not many other options apart from that. Competition has died out and independent wrestlers with the desire to break into it simply cannot attain a job as easily. For those who seem to be going through debt-related problems, though, there is no reason to stand for them.
