Business Debt Collection in a Company Called ECW

By Rob Sutter

In the bluntest of terms, Extreme Championship Wrestling was a revolution. ECW had such a great following in the 90's due to its high amounts of violence and chaos that its competition did not dabble in as much. Whereas well-known companies had advertisers and means of financial backing, ECW thrived off of its fan base which was insanely rabid. Even today the company is held in high regard but looking at it now, ECW should have called for business debt collection.

The man who led Extreme Championship Wrestling since 1996 was Paul Heyman. He understood wrestling to a science, having experience in the field beforehand as a manager. Heyman had a good understanding of wrestling and he had the capability of making a star out of just about anyone who he employed. For instance, Sandman wasn't terribly excellent at the actual wrestling but the fans got behind him because of his charisma. The former was shadowed while the latter was highlighted, Heyman's genius at work.

One of the many reasons that ECW might have failed could have been because of the deal ECW struck with TNN in 1999. Keep in mind that this was the only TV deal that ECW was able to gain. TNN seemingly had a problem with the company, seeing as how little advertising was conducted to let fans at home and potential newcomers know about the shows. The following year, TNN cut off ties with ECW and instead began to air RAW, the flagship show of the World Wrestling Federation.

I could imagine a few members of the roster going to business debt collection in order to secure what they were owed. In order to do this, a reputable company like R.R.S. could have been hired on to do the job effectively. A few wrestlers have been victims of lower pay or bounced checks since Heyman couldn't compensate everyone the same. Heyman believed that the demise of ECW came about because they couldn't land another TV deal in time but his lack of money-managing has been cited as others as the cause behind it, too.

Many people argue whether or not ECW would have faded off if monetary issues weren't prevalent. With World Wrestling Entertainment being as child-friendly as it is today, the raunchy, aggressive ECW might have gotten lost in the shuffle. In any case, the issues that plagued the company was plentiful and it's a shame. ECW was groundbreaking at the time but I believe the saying, "the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long," is quite fitting.
