If you are buying or selling a home, the chances are good you struggle with the meaning of descriptive real estate terms. Here are explanations and definitions for more terms.
Differentiating Living Room and Family Room
When a home has both a living room and a family room, we know which is which. Back in the day, when housing ads mentioned a family room, it was safe to assume a living room also existed. But today's new generation of builders is changing these old conventions, using the "Great Room" I had illustrated previously as their floor plan's designated "Family Room." Thus houses and their terminology seem to be evolving. I suppose in the new builder speak we should just think of the room as an informal family living room.
Your Patio And Terrace
The patio and terrace are outdoor living areas that are paved with brick, slate or similar material. A patio is level with the ground around it. A terrace would have the ground adjacent to it, and this could be higher, lower or both.
Solarium, Sun Room, and Florida Room
These are all terms that describe rooms that have multiple windows, usually on three sides. Oftentimes, these rooms have skylights in them. Apparently the choice of what to call this particular room is based on personal choice. Gardening aficionados like myself appreciate rooms like this, as this where I would place my winter plants if the weather gets freezing, so as to allow exposure to sunlight.
What is a Jack and Jill Bath?
A bathroom with two doors into it. Nothing fancy here - it is usually located between two bedrooms and has a door to each. Sometimes the doors are into a bedroom and into a hallway.
Waterfront and Water View - Which is Which?
Waterfront property, sometimes called lakefront or ocean front, is property with frontage on the water. Sometimes, the water is actually part of the property line. Water view just means water can be seen from the property. Sometimes there is a beautiful view. Sometimes it means the water can be seen from one upstairs window when the leaves are off the trees! You may want to avoid the possibility of having your view blocked by new structures by having some protection - keep this in mind if you want to enjoy the water view on a consistent basis.
If you can get the verbiage down, you'll be way ahead in the real estate game. Look for future articles on this subject or visit our site to read more terms.
