3 Decorating Tips When You're Selling Your House

By Ian Tate

Potential buyers stepping into your house would want to see a house that is clean, neat, and attractively decorated. But avoid overly decorating your house because this is something they don't want to see since they won't be able to picture their possessions in the house. If there are too many pillows and knickknacks on the overstuffed sofas, shelves, and tables, then they won't be able to see the structural and architectural features of a home.

To keep a minimalist approach to your home decorating, here are a few tips you can follow.

TRY TO MINIMIZE Things that are not absolutely essential should be put away. What you can do is try to ask, or maybe even beg, your neighbor for some storage space in their garage or you could even rent a storage locker. You may find out that you can actually live without that stuff and if you can't, then just remember that this isn't forever.

ORGANIZE. You might as well tackle that filing you've been procrastinating for a while and organize your craft materials and other projects. Once again, get rid of anything you can live without temporarily. Better yet, start packing! It would be easy to find baskets that are inexpensive and attractive in stores such as PierOne and WalMart. Using those baskets will help you keep organized. A large basket can be used to stash magazines and coasters under the coffee table. You can put away your personal items such as shaving cream, your makeup kit, or your toothpaste if you use these baskets in the bathroom. People will look at the brand names of the products that you used so they'll end up getting distracted and if you have all that stuff then the house will look used.

THE ARRANGEMENT For the things that you do keep around the house, try to rearrange them in attractive ways so that your house will look interesting. For instance, try to group together the canisters in the kitchen. Spreading them out makes counter space look smaller. For the ledges, fireplace mantels, bookcase, and end tables, the same thing should be done. Group no more than 3 things together, making sure they're varying heights, and mix graduate sizes. An example would be grouping 2 candles on one side of the mantel and on the other side, put something smaller.

When you're decorating the house you're going to sell, keep in mind that potential buyers tend to spend a lot of time looking at personal items and family photographs. That embroidered family tree your aunt made might well spark a long conversation that does nothing to sell your house. Make sure that you put away your photos as well as your personal items.

Personal items may distract the potential buyer from envisioning her own family and stuff living in your house so the key would be to make the look attractive, minimally decorated, and devoid of personal artifacts.
