What If You Didn't File Anything With The Irs?

By Victor Hood

All right, so Tax D-Day, aka April 15th, has passed you by and you haven't quite done anything yet. Here is what you should do if for some reason you failed to file a tax return or extension request.

So the 15th of April Has Passed, And...

The Internal Revenue Service is a bit touchy about filing tax returns. They can take care of running after you later, and would, rather than anything else, see a tax return or extension instead of absolutely nothing on their desks. The worst the IRS can do to you would be to put you on a payment arrangement. But if you do not, or refuse to file anything at all, that will put you a little further up the agency's list of least favorite people, and nobody wants that to happen.

Of course, it would behoove you to pay your taxes, just like you brush your teeth thrice a day and take a bath to avoid smelling like a dirty hippie. Expect the IRS to smite you with penalties and interest of Biblical proportion should you disobey their commandments by refusing to pay your taxes.

It's about time you got off your derriere and did something -- such as file that return. Now there are very few individuals who let returns incubate at the IRS office. Or lazy -- if you are so lazy, in fact, that you make a sloth look like a sweatshop worker, then remember that you will forfeit whatever refunds are payable to your name if you do not claim them within three years from the time you have originally filed your taxes. To be honest, three years is WAY TOO MUCH for lazy bones like them! Now if you are owing taxes, but do not have the money to pay, here is an alternative that may surprise you. To the surprise of many, the IRS accepts credit cards as a payment method. With high interest rates, credit cards are not a great option. But then again, credit card providers have no right to conduct an audit on you! The IRS understands that a certain percentage of taxpayers may not be able to pay all of their taxes. The key to keeping the agency off your back is to file the return even if you cannot pay.
