Tips for Finding Trusty Movers

By Laura Hawn

Moving from one place to another can be a nightmare without some proper preparation and good help. A few people have stories that sound like horror tales: damaged furniture, damaged electronics, massive fees, untrained staff, or even missing personal possessions.

I had my share of bad experiences with movers, but my latest partnership with such a firm proved to be a success. This advice should help folks moving in NYC avoid bad situations caused by a poor call when choosing a moving company.

This does not occur with professional NYC movers. You can't get it wrong with an organization that covers from the start a few essential services and stays fair to their client.

A significant company will always provide the following:

- Fixed pricing costs so you don't have to worry about a unreasonable commission claim.

- Insurance and policies offered by serious companies often cover accidental damage during the manipulation process and during the actual move.

- Handling procedures well defined and executed in a professional way will make sure that the belongings will be safe during the whole process and proper packaging will forestall any accidental damage.

- Qualified staff with proper training will enforce the handling procedures and avoid accidental damage. Additionally, trained and qualified staff will offer a sense of security of the belongings and will ensure that nothing will go missing.

- General policies and company values will be demonstrated upfront so that the customer will have a clear view on the professionalism of the movers.

If all the above aspects are covered, the company can be considered to be a safe bet. Getting some references that can be validated is a clear sign that the customer has selected the right movers NYC has to offer. Even allowing for this, bad experiences are extremely rare, however it never hurts to come prepared with a few guiding principles to follow.
