Now that all the kids are moving into the city, I believe that I would do something nice and hire them some NYC movers . They have a ton of stuff, and I think that although they have been in and out of the city here and there, they don't actually grasp the scale of packing up their whole lives and moving into a large town.
I did that with Philadelphia years ago, and that was such a pain. I thought that I could just rent my own van and bring all of my stuff in it. It seemed like a good idea on paper, but I really did not have the information I needed to navigate those busy city streets.
When I got to my new apartment, I did not have any room to park and I had to find a place to park several blocks away. If I knew that it would be such a trial, I almost certainly would have just thrown in the white flag and called up some good movers who knew how to get this job done.
Now that I have the foresight and the information to tell my children about this type of thing, I believe that it's my duty as a parent to not let them get into the same jam. New York is far larger than Philadelphia, and even though we don't live too far away, when you get into Manhattan, it's like a traffic jungle. Make one wrong turn and you might end up adding a lot of time to your route.
That is the reason why I'd simply look up "movers NYC " and have someone who likes doing this job and who knows how to accomplish the job to get it done. They could pull all of the youngsters' stuff together and knock out all three moves in twenty four hours!
