Established in 1945, with the name that has no clear origin, Altadore is alleged to be named for a mansion County Wicklow, Ireland. Or It could have been a portmanteau word whose first part derive either from "Alta", the old shortening of Alberta, or "alta" for high (the area being on a hill), and whose 2nd part was derived from "dore", a version of the French "d'or", or "of gold".
