Understand the Differing Kinds of Bonds

By Amy Whitehouse

Investing in bonds is terribly safe, and the returns are sometimes superb. There are four common kinds of bonds available and they are sold through the Govt, thru firms, state and local states, and foreign governments.

The best thing about bonds is that you'll get your 1st investment back. This makes bonds the perfect investment automobile for those who are fairly new to investing, or for those that have a low risk tolerance.

The U. S. Govt. sells Treasury Bonds thru the Treasury Dept. You can purchase Treasury Bonds with maturity dates from 3 months to 30 years.

Treasury bonds include Treasury Notes (T-Notes), Treasury Bills (T-Bills), and Treasury Bonds. All Treasury bonds are backed by the U. S. Government, and tax is only charged on the interest the bonds earn.

Company bonds are sold thru public securities markets. A company bond is to all intents and purposes a company selling its debt. Corporate bonds customarily have high rates, but they are a bit risky. If the company goes belly-up, the bond is worthless.

State and local Regimes also sell bonds. Unlike bonds issued by the government, these bonds customarily have higher rates. This is because State and Local Presidencies can really go broke "not like the federal government.

State and Local Government bonds are free from revenue taxes "even on the interest. State and local taxes can also be waived. Tax free Borough Bonds are common State and Local Government Bonds.

Purchasing foreign bonds is actually extremely difficult, and is typically done as a part of a retirement fund. It is commonly very dodgy to invest in foreign states. The safest type of bond to buy is one that is issued by the US Central authority. The interest could be a bit lower, but again, there's not much or no risk involved. For most impressive results, when a bond reaches maturity, reinvest it into another bond.

There you have the various categories of bonds. Invest wisely, or you will soon be requiring relationship guidance!
