What's Up With Extra Tall Bar Stools

By Alex Blaken

When you are choosing a bar stool it has been said that the most important factor to take into consideration is height.

You will have people who might say that other factors are more important items to consider such as the material it's made from or its level of comfort. Height has to be at the top of the list on criteria for choosing bar stools because without the right height for your counter there will be no such thing as comfort.

In recent years more and more new home builders are opting for higher counter tops because of the sense of extra space. Extra tall bar stools are becoming more commonplace as a result of this growing trend.

When choosing an extra tall bar stool you will need to consider an often overlooked factor and that is center of gravity. With people who have young children extra tall bar stools pose a problem because they will topple over easier than their shorter counterparts.

The distance from the seat to the ground is the universal form of measurement for bar stool height. The distance from the ground to the top of the seats back is not a factor. You will come to realise a good reason for this. To allow for a decent amount of room for as many body types as possible it is traditional to allow from 8 to 12 inches from the top of the seat to the underside of the counter. By now you should be realising just how important the height of the bar stools is for the comfort of your guests or customers.

So now that we have established that you do indeed need either extra tall bar stools or standard height, which is universally agreed to be 30 inches, we now need to decide on style and material. A good place to start shopping is in your home. There are more variety and styles online than will find in the brick and mortar shops.

How are you going to be using your new bar stools? Indoors or out, heavy or light traffic are things you should be thinking about. Get something specifically made for outdoor environments if that's where you're going to situate them.

For everyday use you would be more inclined to go for a wooden seat or if you like fabric make sure it is heavily scotch guarded to reduce wear and tear. Metal bar stools are attractive and popular. A mixture of the two materials can produce some beautiful pieces. Excellent for indoors and out they can be moved according to your needs. They can be heavy though.

There are quite a few things to take into consideration when choosing and purchasing bar stools. Take your time; work out what height you need first, then choose the style and you'll be sure to get something just right.
