By Adriana Noton

Perhaps you are remodeling your house or moving to another, smaller location. You may wonder what you are going to do with all of your belongings in the mean time. Using temporary storage may be the answer for you. There are other reasons why you may need to utilize temporary storage as well. Maybe you are gathering inventory to start a business, or you inherited your grandmothers doll collection.

Renting a temporary unit should not be a hard task. You see units everywhere. Usually they are long buildings divided up into smaller units. Unit sizes can range from 5 x 5 to 10 x 30. The units typically have large garage type doors on the front. When you rent a unit you bring anything that you want or need to store and pack it into the unit.

It is a good idea to pack the things in boxes or plastic totes that can be stacked easily. You may also want to label everything as well. Then your items will be easy to find while they are packed away. After you have moved your belongings into your unit, you will then secure your door with your own lock.

If you want to access your belongings, you can do so at any time. It may be a good idea to keep your rental agreement in your vehicle and bring an ID just in case the facilities security questions your reason for being there. It would be a good idea to have it just so you can show them that it is your unit.

Rental fees for units are paid on a monthly basis. The cost of the unit usually depends on the location and the size of the unit itself. Monthly rental rates can be as low as twenty dollars and up. Often facilities will have promotions and offer discounts such as the first month for one dollar.

It is really important that you pay your monthly rental fee though, because there seems to some storage units that will auction off your belongings if you do not pay your fees. The way that works is they will cut the lock off of your unit and let the bidders look inside and then your personal belongings go to the highest bidder. Typically the bidders then sale your stuff to make a profit off of it. There are other facilities that will just haul your belonging to the dump if you do not pay for your rental fees.

Another method is the more contemporary method that makes it very simple. There are companies that will transport the unit to your home or place of business. You then will place your belongings into the unit however you desire and lock it. When you are finished filling up your unit and have it secured, you will then call the company, they will come and pick up the storage unit and return it to their site. This eliminates you having to pack and unpack and repack your belongings to get them into storage. Of course this service is a lot more expensive than the self storage method.

No matter what you store in your storage Toronto unit, keeping it organized is the key. It is a good idea to keep a walkway clear through the unit so you don't have to unpack the whole unit to get to the items in the back.
