Things To Consider When Hiring Movers

By Adriana Noton

Moving can be a stressful task regardless of how far your move takes you and hiring movers can be a stressful part of that task. In this article we will review some of the different aspects of moving companies and things to look for when looking for a company.

There are a lot of scammers and thieves out there who will pose as moving companies and then just disappear with your belongings. This is a really scary thought when you consider that you will be placing your most valuable belongings into their care. The monetary value is far less than the sentimental value that you have attached to some of your belongings.

The first thing to do is to get recommendations for movers. Perhaps your friends or coworkers have employed the services of a mover recently or they know someone who has. Gather information from them about the movers they used. Find out what their thoughts are. Word of mouth recommendations are better than just picking names out of the yellow pages.

Ask the companies that you have gathered information on to come to your house and give you an estimate. Make sure that the movers know everything that they will have to move. Point out extra heavy pieces and whether there are stairs. Make sure that they go all through the house. When they give you an estimate, be sure to find out if they charge by the hour or by the job and also if they charge mileage fees.

After you get the estimates, you may want to take some time and research the backgrounds of the different companies. There are services and web based databases that will let you check to see if they have had any complaints against them. Check their references. Compare their rates and services carefully before you make your final decision.

Some moving companies will provide boxes and packing materials for additional costs. You may want to consider gathering up these supplies yourself to help defray the cost of the move. One thing to consider is to pack glassware and breakables among towels and clothes. You have to move these items as well and it will cut the cost of buying bubble wrap or packing peanuts. Just remember to be careful when unpacking so not to break the things wrapped with the towels or clothes.

The moving company will be responsible for the loss or damage to your valuable belongings. You should ensure that they have adequate insurance coverage to handle the cost of any lost or damaged items. You also may want to request a copy of their license and ensure that they are able to legally handle moves that may require transporting your cargo out of state.

When moving day finally arrives you should do everything in your power to be prepared. Have things organized and ready to go in a smooth process. This is a good thing if the movers are charging by the hour. You do not want a one day job to stretch into a two day job if you're paying hourly rates. Make sure that you get a packing list showing that all of your belongings have been packed and are accounted for.

Give the moving company Vancouver any instructions they may need for their destination. Let them know things like whether they should use the front door or the back, are their stairs, or if there's an elevator. Give them directions to the new location to make sure that they know how to get there. If possible, have someone available to accompany them, or at least waiting at the new location when they get there. Make sure they have a spare key, just in case they get there first.
