By Artur Ciesielski

With a colorful past, a slogan of "Living Like It Counts" and an environmental supportability program going forward, Phoenix, Arizona is deserving of the 2009 All America Town name. It is a leader with longevity in the environmental venue. Town govt management and staff are habitually aiming at a sustainable future for its residents.

Environmental Quality

More than 80 city programs are in place and allow the town to move forward and thrive in a beautiful and unique desert environment. The long history of this city shows that they're not scared to tackle a new frontier, break barriers and be trailblazers in various endeavors that move the city, the country and the planet forward.

Air quality is vital to the people in the town of 1,600,000 people "a city offering both modern and historic perspectives of its districts as they emerge thru the years. Today, Sky Harbour World Airport brings you to the home of Intel, Wells Fargo Monetary, Raytheon, Honeywell, Target, Arizona State College, Safeway, American Express and Bank One. The airport is also the doorway to history.

Lovin ' the History

Phoenix was the 1st city to convert state to the council-manager format in 1913 and has maintained it ever since. Of the 80+ active town programs, 2 stand out as a consequence of their forward thinking, planning and historic preservation. The Significant Preservation Office is working to save and beautify many historic districts, sites and buildings in Phoenix.

The second program involves Environmental Supportability and works closely with the historic group. This city is all about its roots and its heritage. The Historic Preservation Commission identifies properties and districts suitable for a listing on the Phoenix Historic Property Register. HPO offers security to properties through city a city review process, which also approves alterations of building exteriors and evaluates requests for demolitions also.

A Stretching Metropolis

The Phoenix Historic Preservation bond fund gives financial help for the rehab of consequential Phoenix properties. There are at least 35 named consequential neighborhood districts and the top five include:

1. The Garfield Neighborhood renaming looks to be a recurring theme as enlargement spread to embrace more blocks, buildings and streets. In November 2005, a boundary adjustment forced consolidation, inclusion and the current name change. The historical significance of this neighborhood covers the years from 1883-1942.

2. 2 other neighborhoods fall into the same period. They're North Garfield (1887-1942) and Oakland (1887-1951).

3. A boundary adjustment to the Forest area (1880-1935) became efficacious in December 2002

4. The next neighborhood has historic significance ranging from 1907-1942. This is the Coronado area.

5. The area of East Evergreen did experience serious expansion during the period from 1907-1929

Visit the Castle

Consequential homes and districts in Central Phoenix would not be complete without mention of the Tovrea Castle at Carraro. The castle has a location at the apex of a hill overlooking east central Phoenix. Generations of residents and visitors find the structure, built between 1928 and 1930, fascinating. The City of Phoenix now owns the 44 acres and the castle.

The city did conduct massive restoration of the castle, now empty since 1969. Despite the serious impact of the recession, Phoenix officials continue their efforts to return the Carraro Cactus Garden to its previous glory. But tours of the castle and the cactus garden aren't available due to significant budget constraints.
