Timeshare Resale: Low Cost But At What Price?

By Emil Benjamin

Timeshare is a proven concept of travel and vacation planning for many people around the world today. Timeshare has become one of the segments of the travel industry that continues to grow dramatically over the years.

Timeshares allows you to own a unit that can sleep up to 10 people and with amenities that can allow you to work as if you were home and better. Complete with kitchen, dining and living area for everyone to enjoy.

However, there are times when an owner finds they just do not want their timeshare anymore. Perhaps their financial situation has changed or their lifestyle situation has changed. At any rate, a timeshare becomes more of a burden than a benefit. At this point, timeshare resale is a viable option.

Even though functionally timeshares are similar to real estate, when it comes to timeshare resells the monetary aspect is more like selling a car than selling real estate: owners can expect to get only a fraction of their original cost back. That being said, the benefits for both the seller and buyer in a timeshare resale are still worth it. The owner can get out of his obligation while the buyer can get the full benefits of timeshare ownership at a fraction of the cost.

Timeshare resells tend to get between 10% and 50% of the original purchase price back into the owner's pocket. Prices will vary on destination desirability, supply, and demand. A timeshare in a resort that is sold out that does not have units come up for sale often will be more highly valued because of limited supply than a timeshare in a resort that has many new and used units for sale.

One of the more convenient ways to sell a timeshare is to go through a timeshare resell company. Most of them take a percentage of the sale value. Some ask for money upfront but I would be wary of using those timeshare companies and opt for one that would take a percentage.

Tips in reselling your timeshare

For reselling, one fantastic option is to go through a real estate agent or realtor. They are already familiar with real estate sales and will already have a list of prospects from their own client list.

There are a lot of unscrupulous resellers alongside the good ones. For that reason it's best to not ignore your gut feeling and trust your instincts. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It is the same whenever you are making a choice to buy or sell anything of substance. If something does not feel quite right, don't be afraid to walk away and find another opportunity.

Buying A Timeshare resell

Similar to buying a used car, sometimes it is better to go with a good name, one that has been in the industry for quite some time. That is one advantage of going with a realtor belonging to an agency you've heard of versus a "For Sale By Owner" deal.

For buyers, you can have your vacation planning move faster than you expect right after finding the ultimate vacation spot you have only been dreaming about for a fraction of the cost. When your ideal timeshare resells, make a wise buying decision and enjoy your dream vacation the way you should.

The hardest part is finding the timeshare resell. Most promotional efforts for timeshares are by the resorts themselves selling new timeshares. The resources behind new timeshare sales dwarfs the resale market. However, you can find resell opportunities both as a buyer and seller by using the internet. The internet is your best friend. Check out classified ad websites, ebay, and craigslist. In addition, use the internet to seek out timeshare resell listing websites as well. Then from there it is simply going with your gut feeling and making a smart decision to buy. This will give you a luxurious vacation opportunity at a fraction of the list price for a new timeshare.
