The revitalization of downtown Fort Myers River District has arrived at a new level. Take pleasure in the new brick streets and palm trees with the many new activities. The activities count the Art Walk, Music Walk as well as the Florida Repertory Theatre Company, which was acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal as "profoundly satisfying" and see an artist's paradise emerging in the near future.
An article recently appeared in the Fort Myers News Press explaining that there are plans to make the biggest Art Co-op in the state of Florida. The Co-op is planned to be created at former rail station.
James DiGiorgio, a local metal artist who is the Chief Executive Officer of the nonprofit co-op says "there is nothing like this in Florida now." Plans include galleries, artist studios, a sculpture garden, practice for local bands, a caf, a metal and woodworking shop, a TV production studio and three resident arts groups: The Laboratory Theatre of Florida, a dance troupe and a musical ensemble. Ken von Heidecke, a world famous choreographer who recently purchased at Oasis has offered to direct a ballet troupe.
The nonprofit co-op is planned to be created at a large 6 acre property, with four steel buildings at the former 1922 terminal for Seaboard Railroad. The Laboratory Theatre, the community theater in Sydney Berne Davis Center will anchor the facility. Art director, Annette Trossbach, has been working hard to transform the 10,000 square foot building in the southernmost into a theater with a ticket booth.
The CEO of the co-op DiGiorgio is expected to begin work on the property on July 1 and fundraisers will probably start soon after that said date. Everything adds to the already vivacious downtown community and will help attract visitors from everywhere in the world.
