Devere Group Scam Article Warning

By Geoff Patri

Police are trying to hunt down fraudsters placing advertisements in local papers in the United Kingdom looking for mystery shoppers to check a web cash transfer service.

The conmen are providing commission to volunteers who trial the US based Western Union to test the efficiency of staff running the service.

The gang sends fake checks from banks all around the globe to the mystery shoppers, who pay them in to their bank accounts before wiring the money back to the gang from a Western Union office.

The problem is the checks bounce but the secret shoppers have to send the money on bill, leaving them out of pocket.

In one of the most recent incidents, stemming from an ad in a local paper in the Scottish Borders, one man lost more than ?1,000 wiring money to S. A..

Lothian and Borders Police are encouraging anyone who agreed to work as a mystery shopper for the company to contact police instantly.

A police speaker said: "The cheques mystery shoppers receive are fraudulent and should not be transferred into your account."

Western Union say their service is typically focused by fraudsters and so the mystery shopper trick is beginning to become commoner.

" In several cases, fraudsters contact victims thru work websites and ask them to appraise the Western Union money transfer service, " said a spokesman.

" The fraudster sends the victim a cheque and indoctrinates them to deposit the cheque and use the funds less a commission to send a money transfer. The victim sends the money transfer and the fraudster picks it up and when the check rebounds the victim is left down on the deal. "

Both police and Western Union counsel not to send any money before any cheque received clears.

Another common Western Union fraud is conmen contacting victims pretending they are helping somebody they know with a request for money as a result of a vacation financial emergency, like posting bail, paying fines or settling doctor's bills.
