Benefits Of Different Types Of Patio Doors

By Adriana Noton

Whether you have a tiny balcony or a spacious wrap around deck, you need a way to get from the inside of your home to that outdoor space. For this purpose, people often choose to install patio doors, which are typically wider and offer more of a view than many other kinds of door. The two most common types of patio doors are the sliding and hinged varieties, but there are other kinds to consider as well. When choosing what kind of door to install between your house and your deck, it is important to be aware of all of the options.

The sliding kind is basically what it sounds like. It consists of two panels that are side by side when closed. To open, one of the panels slides over top of the other panel. This provides a space for walking through. Often, these sliding panels will be clear, like a window, to allow for a view to the outside. They are popular because they save space, since they do not need to swing in or out and take up room either indoors or outdoors. This is especially convenient for small patios.

Hinged varieties swing open and closed just like traditional doors. As a patio door, a hinged door often has two panels that open in the middle. This kind of door is easily customizable, so it allows for flexibility when it comes to style and function. They are often made out of clear materials to look more like a sliding door, but they are just as frequently made with frames and other decoration.

A storm door is another type. This kind is found in any geographic location where severe weather is a concern. They are particularly common in coastal areas because hurricanes and tropical storms are prevalent. A storm door is made to withstand strong winds and other elements. It is constructed of durable materials, including impact-resistant glass and material that resists corrosion and rust even after exposure to water.

Screened doors are also available. This usually consists of one or more panels that are attached to any of the other types of door. The screen is intended to keep insects and other bugs out while still letting the fresh air in.

A door of any of these types can be made of several different materials. Three of the common ones are vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass. These are all known to be low maintenance and offer plenty of style options.

A wood patio door is another option. This can require somewhat higher levels of maintenance, but with a little stain or paint, the necessary maintenance is lowered a lot. This type of door is incredibly stylish and provides a lot of options to help you achieve your desired look. Wood is also known as a good insulator.

The best thing to do when choosing patio doors is to consider all of the options. Figure out exactly what your specific needs are, and then choose the option that best fits those needs. Any of the above types can be purchased in a variety of price ranges to fit any budget.
