Preparing For A Visit To The Carpet Store

By Naomi G. Groawski

Now that you have managed to put enough money away for the project, it's time to start thinking about tearing up that nasty old rug and getting something new and fresh installed. You can look for new ideas online or in catalogs, but you will have the best opportunity to get a good feel for things if you go to a carpet store.

If you want wall to wall, fitted coverings then you will need the dimensions of the space. In any event, you will want to have an idea as to the size of the area to be dealt with. Most retailers will have several examples of their wares available for customers to inspect. The size and texture of the product is easily evaluated.

Because they are such large and unavoidable decorative elements in any home, rugs and the like should be matched to the colors of the walls, or other decor already present. This will help to tie a room together conceptually. This is the primary difference between a living room that looks haphazard and thrown together and one that inspires comfort, happiness, and a feeling of deliberate arrangement.

As you enter the retail establishment, remember what you are looking for. It is very helpful for a sales person if you can relay to them as much of your hopes and wishes as possible. With enough information, they will be able to make very good suggestions.

Remember, a sales person does not know everything about you or your home, and anything they suggest is meant only for your consideration. Good sales people do not try to force anyone into a purchase.

Usually people have had their rugs for a long time before they decide to get new ones. In the intervening years they may discover that many exciting changes have been made to the world of fabrics. Modern rugs are often made of mildew and stain resisting compounds, and many even offer extra protection against the smells left by animals and infants.

Installation crews often have the ability to take up and dispose of your existing rugs. This is very handy, because that can be a very difficult chore for most people. Ask the sales person in any carpet store you decide to look at if this is something that their workmen will be able to do for you. In most instances it would be considered part and parcel of the job. This will also eliminate the need for you to strain and struggle with a huge roll of fabric. Trying to stuff it into your hatchback is probably not what you want to do with your afternoon.
